It’s starting to feel like summer here in the Everglades. The lubber grasshoppers are in abundance, cumulus clouds are towering over the landscape, and water is finally returning to the cypress domes! The once dried periphyton that sits on top of our limestone bedrock, is now soaking up water and nutrients that will serve as food for tadpoles, invertebrates, and fish. The canopy inside the cypress dome is lush, providing protection against the summer sun. Some orchids are blooming in the park as well. It’s a beautiful sight here in the park!

Before going into the cypress dome this summer, be sure you have all the necessary equipment and materials to keep you protected during your wet walk. Bug jackets and bug spray are a must during this time of year. We recommend wearing closed toed shoes, long pants, a long breathable shirt, and a good hat. There are plenty of mosquitos in the park that will take any opportunity they can get for a blood meal.

When you join the Everglades Insitute on a wet walk, your Everglades naturalist will provide you a bug jacket, walking stick, and bug spray. You have the option to rent closed toed shoes if you don’t have any, and a bib that helps keep your pants dry and mosquitos away.

Summer is a great time to explore the south Florida wet season. Come and see the magic for yourself! Book a wet walk with the Everglades Institute
